The Fairbanks North Star
Borough (FNSB) has chosen to display ownership information for the
properties contained in our GIS. However, we do recognize that many people
are concerned about the information about themselves or their properties
displayed on the Internet. If you have such concerns, we ask that you
consider the following points.

Virtually all of the
records maintained by the FNSB are legally considered to be matters of
public record. This is a matter of law. The applicable Alaska statutes
and Borough ordinances were passed, in part, to help make our local
government more accountable to the people that it serves.

The Fairbanks North
Star Borough is charged with the valuation of all real property within
the Borough. In order to achieve this goal, the Borough annually
collects more than 100 pieces of data on each of more than 40,000
properties. Publishing this information on the Internet helps promote
and ensure the accuracy of the data. Public review of our records has
resulted in the correction of inadvertent errors.

You should be aware
that much, if not all, of this information is also available elsewhere
on the Internet. Restricting the information that we display on our web
site will not increase your privacy, but it would certainly limit access
to public information and thereby compromise the usefulness of the
database.
